Book Promotion expert and Founder of Spirit Authors, Lynn Serafinn, shares a morsel from her 10-week course Module 2: “Pre-Publication Marketing Musts” (subtitle “100 Days to Build Your Online Promotional Platform”).
LinkedIn is perhaps the most elusive of online tools for many new social networkers. Many people first come to it and cannot understand how it can possibly help them with business and network building, but that is simply because, on the surface, LinkedIn appears to be starkly formal with little opportunity for interaction compared to the colourful interface Facebook provides, and the face-paced exchanges found in Twitter.
But while LinkedIn is definitely more of a professional network than it is a social network, when you explore all it has to offer you will find it to be not only a place where you can thrive and establish your renown as a professional (including a professional author), but also where you can find a virtually endless supply of information and referrals, as well as have access to thousands of people in your target audience.
While there are so many aspects to explore in LinkedIn, today I just want to share 1 very quick tip with you that can help you make LinkedIn work for you as you build your online platform, either for your book promotion or other business.
What’s the tip?
To establish yourself as an expert.
How do you do that? You do this by answering questions others post in the LinkedIn Q&A. You can access the Q&A by clicking “more” in your LinkedIn profile, and then selecting “Question”. When you are prompted, select “answer questions.”
When people post questions on LinkedIn, they have to put them in at least one category and/or subcategory. I recommend searching for a topic that is closely related to your specific area of expertise. I frequently answer questions on writing/editing, technology, internet marketing, etc. Have a look around for subjects that match your expertise most.
When you find a question you think is “juicy”, and which you feel confident about providing information, read over the replies received so far and then give an answer that gives added value to the person who asked the question. BE GENEROUS in your reply. Share from your expertise and experience. Give links to outside sources you believe would help the person. The key to this process is to focus on what you can GIVE the other person. There is nothing more irritating to me when I go on LinkedIn and read replies to questions that are obvious spam or simply attempts to gain attention. Invariably it backfires on the person. But if you are generous with your wisdom and your professional knowledge, people really appreciate it.
After a question has been online for some time (usually 7 days), it closes unless the person who asked the question keeps it open. After it closes, LinkedIn sends a request to the person who asked the question asking them to rank who gave the best answer to the question. If your response to the question is selected as the “best”, you then are ranked as an “expert” in that particular subject. Your expert status is then a permanent part of your LinkedIn profile. Every time your answers are selected as the best, you gain another accolade as an expert.
Establishing yourself as an expert on LinkedIn helps others to see that you are knowledgeable on specific subject areas AND that you are a generous and helpful person. People can also click your expert status and see exactly what kind of knowledge and information you are sharing, which further establishes your credibility.
The long-term benefit of this is that people will come to trust you both as a professional and as a person. If you think that will not have a positive impact upon your business (and even your book sales) think again. Because LinkedIn is a professional network, as opposed to a social network, it does indeed have limitations on how you can market yourself compared to Twitter or Facebook, for instance. But in helping you establish your professional credibility, LinkedIn becomes a great balance to the other components of your online platform.
There’s a lot more to LinkedIn, what to speak of blogging, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and many other components on online promotion. I cover these in GREAT detail in my course Spirit Authors Module 2: “Pre-Publication Marketing Musts” (or “80 Days to Build Your Online Promotional Platform”).

Caron Goode, author of Kids Who See Ghosts
If you are a regular reader of this blog, you know that in addition to providing articles on writing and promoting your book, I also like to highlight mind-body-spirit authors of note who have new books I think would be inspirational and/or helpful to my readers. Today, I have to pleasure of sharing an interview I did with award-winning author (and member of the Virtual Faculty here on Spirit Authors) Dr Caron Goode about her new book ‘Kids Who See Ghosts’, which is coming to Amazon on Tuesday June 8, 2010. To find out how to buy the book ‘Kids Who See Ghosts’and receive free personal development gifts on June 8, 2010, go to: http://www.kidswhoseeghosts.com
This interview is Day 4 of a 2-week Virtual Blog Tour for this unique new title. Check out yesterday’s stop at the ‘Intuitive Parenting’ blog at http://intuitiveparenting.wordpress.com/
Lynn: Hi Caron. My audience are all ‘Spirit Authors’. What’s your personal definition (or definitions) of the word ’spirit’?
Caron: I feel spirit is the loving intelligent energy within and without. In the book Kids Who See Ghosts, we use the term ’spirit walker’ to refer to those ‘persons’ who walk in spirit, as physical walkers refer to those of us still in body.
In the field of spirituality, metaphysics, paranormal, and higher consciousness, people whom I interviewed for the book commented to me that that the term ‘ghosts’ was distasteful to them. Yet the public knows the term through the media that pumps the word into our psyches. So spirit, spirit walker, ghosts all refer to those souls or person in the spirit world.
Lynn: What are the reasons why you wrote Kids Who See Ghosts?
Caron: After I posted a blog article about the television debut of Psychic Kids on the A & E channel in the United States, the web site was flooded with tens of thousands of requests for help and information from parents whose kids were seeing ghosts. Some parents wanted to know how to protect their child, how to handle their kids’ fears, whether or not to seek medical assistance. Others felt their children demonstrated intuitive gifts.. Still others needed information as to appropriate age ranges for having imaginary friends or how to handle teens who still had some “ghostly” acquaintances.
Over time, the questions were the same, and each situation was unique, requiring time to respond and gather information. The next logical step was the book.
The timing was perfect to interview parents, psychologists, skeptics, shamans, and psychics and find out what the temperature was on the topic; and boy, it ranged from icy to sizzling hot.
The most important reason for writing the book was because I couldn’t fathom that a child would be unable to sleep in their bedroom because something so frightened the core of their being. And, if they were afraid of their world as a child, would they still be fearful as an adult.
Lynn: Is this book just about “ghosts”? What other answers will people find in your book?
Caron: Kids Who See Ghosts is a guide to help parents empower their children by moving them through theirs fears and to have success in befriending, helping, conquering, or loving their ghosts.
The true answers as to why children see ghosts, how they experience their world of spirit walkers, and how a shift in brain-wave frequency or perception can open or close that door. What would happen if kids learned to shift their moods and control those images?
Lynn: How does your book Kids Who See Ghosts speak to our innermost spiritual selves?
Caron: What is inside your deepest spiritual self? We know that the human eyes see light, and only a sliver of the entire light spectrum at best. Each human brain, as a transmitter and receiver of energy, determines the images. So why do some eyes see demons and scary figures of death while others’ eyes see angels or light?
Kids Who See Ghosts gives people pause to question the ghost phenomenon, and ask what it portends for our endless curiosity about the extraordinary. Is it a distraction from our spiritual essence, only the doorway for the curious, a trend destined to open the human mind to deeper intuition or involution?
Lynn: From an author’s perspective, what is unique about how you wrote the book?
Caron: Unique for me was not taking a cognitive approach, thinking about the content, the proposal, worrying about the topic being too far out for my field, expertise, and professional reputation. For the two books, Raising Intuitive Children and Kids Who See Ghosts, I felt a strong intuitive pull that the time was now. I sat down immediately to write the Kids Who See Ghosts book proposal, sent it to the agent, and the publisher loved the idea. I followed my intuition as a purposeful guide for how to write, manage and complete this book.
Lynn: What can aspiring authors learn about how you wrote it?
Caron: This was a new experience to interview twenty people, from professionals who work with kids, to parents, and skeptics and psychics, and weave a sellable story of such diverse themes. The themes that eventually emerged was listen to children, do not judge ghost experiences, do not the put down or judge the kids who have them. The caretaking of the children was a theme of all those interviewed, even the skeptic. My motto became, “You don’t have to believe in ghosts, just believe in and respect your children.

Reader Questions – What is My First Move to Get Started in Self-Publishing?
Posted by: Lynn Serafinn | Comments (0)
Do you dream of your book flying off the shelves?
Every week I get dozens of questions from readers and social networking friends. I thought today I’d share this one with you, because it is something I am asked almost on a daily basis.
Question: I want to get started in self-publishing, but don’t know what my first move would be. Is it best to get some kind of agent? If I have little money, is it best to raise the money first?
Answer: You can find agents in books like Writers’ & Artists’ Yearbook 2010 (Writers’ and Artists’ Yearbook), or 2009 Guide To Literary Agents, but you do NOT need an agent for self-publishing. You only would approach an agent if and when you are looking for a publisher. My suggestion is don’t even think of seeking out an agent until you have built your promotional platform and already have a strong following. If you don’t know what I mean by that, please read on
I get dozens of emails every week asking me this same question of “how do I get started?” I have stopped sending out emails and giving free consultations of the topic of self-publishing because it was taking up all my time, and it was not helping people get anywhere. A one-off call or an email explanation is of little use without working together to develop a really structured strategic plan that starts with a strong, targeted promotional platform.
Unfortunately, most new authors haven’t a clue what “a strong targeted promotional platform” means, nor do they know how to do it. And building your promotional platform is THE first step to self-publishing. In fact, building your promotional platform is something you should start at least 6 months before your book is due to come out. I started mine over a year in advance, and I made bestseller lists the day my book came out. Since then, I’ve learned a LOT more, and now I help authors to achieve even better results than I did.
As far as saving up your money, yes, it is very important to decide just how much money you are willing to invest in the production AND promotion of your book over the coming year. But most importantly, you need to decide where that money is going to be spent, and what would make the biggest impact– not only on your sales but also on your overall happiness.
To hire me (or someone else) as a 1-to-1 coach and project manager to help you build your platform and design your book campaign is certainly an alternative (and I work VERY hard for my clients), but hiring a private coach might not be financially possible for some, especially brand new authors.
And from my end, working with one author at a time is great, but simply does not allow me to reach the sheer quantity of people who ask me for help on a weekly basis.
Finding a publisher or hiring someone, whether an agent, a coach or a PR and imagining they will magically take all the “burden” of marketing your book away from you is not only a delusion, but it will also disempower you and disconnect you from your project in the long term. Understanding, reaching and connecting regularly and authentically with your audience is THE key to your long term satisfaction in your career as a mind-body-spirit author.
And for all those reasons, and many more, I started Spirit Authors at www.spiritauthors.com.
I call Spirit Authors a “Virtual Coaching and Learning Experience” for mind-body-spirit authors.
I am utilising my combined skills and professional experience as a teacher, trainer, coach and online promotional expert to design 5 modular courses intended to train both new authors, as well as those who might have published before but may not have gotten the results they wanted.
Module 1 is all about starting and writing your book, and developing your personal style, and understanding what “blocks” you. Of course, if you have already written your book, you don’t have to start here. You can start right in at Module 2.
Module 2 is all about building your online promotional platform. This is something you really should initiate many months before your book is ready to go to print, as it involves establishing a following long before your book is released, using social networking and other means. I really believe this Module is going to be the big cornerstone “eye opener” for many authors.
Module 3 is about getting ready to publish, including understanding about royalties, getting endorsements, finding and working with a copy editor, etc.
Module 4 is about creating a book launch campaign, which is a complex art in itself, and it can be executed properly only when the things I teach in Modules 2 and 3 are in place.
Module 5 is on how to take your book further, after a (hopefully) successful self-publishing launch, so you can expand your visibility and build a business around your profile as an author.
The Spirit Authors site will also include an online professional environment via a Forum, so people can establish connections for joint venture partnering, which is really the foundation of self-publishing success (or any internet-based businesses today).
In addition, I am currently compiling a list of very valuable resources for authors, which I am making available only to members.
We will also have monthly “Master Mind” calls. I have a HUGE list of people who want to come and share their wisdom with my Spirit Authors. On these calls, you will highly specialised experts in the field, and be able to ask them your questions, and discover their secrets.
And remember: all of these elements are custom designed specifically with the mind-body-spirit author in mind. I am a lifelong artist and spiritual questor (if that’s a word?). I speak YOUR language, and not the language of other cookie-cutter book marketing programmes.
To sum up, the hope and dream I have in creating Spirit Authors is to provide mind-body-spirit authors with all the answers they need to be successful in their writing projects.
The site will be a membership site, and is opening the week of 22-26 February 2010. I have a “Grand Opening Webinar Week” (free of course) with 18 successful authors, publishers, editors, book marketers and others, all with a mind-body-spirit focus, who will be talking on various topics. I am sure you would enjoy it and find the information useful.

I hope that helps, and I look forward to getting to know more about your work.

“I was truly blessed when I found Lynn Serafinn, best selling author of
Living life is often like navigating oneself around a hall of mirrors... Reflecting a myriad of our inner qualities. Some mirrors show us a distorted vision of ourselves, we are ugly, fat, unhealthy and unlovable and some mirrors reflect our beauty, wisdom, kindness and compassion. Lynn Serafinn offered me a picture of clarity, strength, commitment, deep knowledge and vast generosity. She literally showed me how to reach up out of my pit and grasp my own power. I've had so many ideas kicking about in my head, but never had the bottle to put them 'out there' before. The mirror Lynn reflects is one of pure self empowerment and I would recommend anyone to gaze into her reflection.
