Archive for Grand Opening

magic penHi everyone. If you haven’t seen a blog post from me for while, it’s because I’ve been more or less intravenously connected to my PC for the past 3 weeks getting ready for the big Grand Opening of Spirit Authors, which is coming up in only 3 days (yikes!).

I wanted to share with you my realisation that Spirit Authors was actually something I’ve been dreaming about in some form or another since I was a teenager.

Let me tell you a story.

When I was 15 years old, I was a classical violinist growing up on Long Island, New York. I played in several youth orchestras and also in opera companies. Well, in one of these opera companies was a very handsome young boy my age named Bobby. I had a fierce crush on him. Bobby was a brilliant pianist and one day he asked me to come to his house to attend a piano recital he and his sister were giving. Of course, because I had such a school-girl crush on him, I immediately said, “YES!” I went to the recital, my heart pounding as I sat in the small, but enthusiastic audience. As I practically swooned to the strains of Chopin, I could not possibly know this event would change my destiny.

Sitting in the small basement recital hall, I thought to myself:

I love this feeling. I want to duplicate it every day of my life. I MUST open a school some day. I want lots and lots of musicians to come and play, and lots of people to applaud them. I’ll have lots of teachers and there’ll be so much stuff going on. So much music. So many people. And I’ll be the one who brings them all together. I will create the space and open the doors and they can create the magic.

From that day, I decided it was my life’s ambition to open a music school.

Well, I did go on to become a music teacher. I did indeed hold many music recitals for my students. It was wonderful to see their friends and families applauding them and their faces shining with self-satisfaction. But I never created a full-fledged school.

Later in life, I moved to the UK, became music technology teacher, and did a Masters in distance education, where I learned to create online courses. I loved the idea of distance learning because it opened up the entire world to education. I had a vision of transforming the lives of thousands of people who had no access to higher education by creating online courses. Think of all people I could reach who would not otherwise be able to attend an educational institution! I thought.

I pitched this dream to a potential employer for a job as the head of a large Performing Arts department at a college here in the UK. Well, I got the job, but after two years, I realised that no one was really interested in my creating some big global online virtual learning environment. I guess it had sounded pretty cool during the interview, but when it came down to day-to-day operations, this vision simply didn’t fit into the status quo. I left the college, somewhat disheartened that no one shared the vision.

Not really knowing my direction, I did what any self-respecting 50-plus-year-old single woman would do in the middle of a mid-life… um… transition:

I decided to write a book.

Ok, I know that sounds like a non sequitur, but I had been writing poems and stories since I was 12. I had also just finished ghost writing several spirituality books for another author, and it had rekindled the spark inside me to publish a book in my own name, in my own voice.

It was during that same time period I became a coach. In one of my early training courses, we did a visualisation called “Future Self” (perhaps some of you have done it too?). During the visualisation, I saw myself as an old woman running a school, with lots of teachers, lots of people…

Hmmm… and yes, they were all playing music… but not the kind of music you listened to with your ears…

They were all playing the music of the heart.

Well it took me a few years to discover exactly what this elusive vision meant, and what it was calling me to do. After toying with many different “rough drafts” of what it might mean, and after becoming a self-published bestselling author, and establishing a successful practice as a book promotion coach for mind-body-spirit authors, it finally “hit” me:

It was time to create Spirit Authors.

It’s true. Spirit Authors was to be my “music” school AND my online learning environment. This would be the place that would turn up the volume of the music in the hearts of thousands, if not millions of people.

“Millions?” you ask?

Think about it. Let’s say I can help even a few hundred (say 500) spirit-based authors become published and launch wonderful, inspiring books that help to elevate the spirit and connect with Self in one way or another. Then, let’s say each of those authors is read and loved by even as few as 2000 readers worldwide. That would mean 1,000,000 people were being touched and transformed, whether directly or indirectly, by this humble project called Spirit Authors!

And I feel the magic already starting. Ever since announcing my intention to start Spirit Authors, I have enjoyed phenomenal help and support from hundreds of people. It’s as if the Universe is saying to me, “Yes! This is what was calling you back in the 1960s when you sat in Bobby’s basement listening to his unforgettably compelling rendition of Polonaise Militaire. We wanted you to remember that feeling so you could help others harness this same Cosmic Alchemy for themselves, and create a more beautiful world through their collective spirit and literary brilliance.”

So that’s my goal.

By the way, Bobby never asked me out, but I just found his website on the Internet, and apparently he’s still changing people’s lives with his stunning piano playing (still pretty cute, too!). But I’ll never forget him because it was that one moment when my heart swelled with the spirit of his music, that my life path became permanently altered, to bring me here and now, with all of you.

Thanks for reading.

Warm wishes,

The dream of your book flying off the shelves

Do you dream of your book flying off the shelves?

Every week I get dozens of questions from readers and social networking friends. I thought today I’d share this one with you, because it is something I am asked almost on a daily basis.

Question: I want to get started in self-publishing, but don’t know what my first move would be. Is it best to get some kind of agent? If I have little money, is it best to raise the money first?

Answer: You can find agents in books like Writers’ & Artists’ Yearbook 2010 (Writers’ and Artists’ Yearbook), or 2009 Guide To Literary Agents, but you do NOT need an agent for self-publishing. You only would approach an agent if and when you are looking for a publisher. My suggestion is don’t even think of seeking out an agent until you have built your promotional platform and already have a strong following. If you don’t know what I mean by that, please read on

I get dozens of emails every week asking me this same question of “how do I get started?” I have stopped sending out emails and giving free consultations of the topic of self-publishing because it was taking up all my time, and it was not helping people get anywhere. A one-off call or an email explanation is of little use without working together to develop a really structured strategic plan that starts with a strong, targeted promotional platform.

Unfortunately, most new authors haven’t a clue what “a strong targeted promotional platform” means, nor do they know how to do it. And building your promotional platform is THE first step to self-publishing. In fact, building your promotional platform is something you should start at least 6 months before your book is due to come out. I started mine over a year in advance, and I made bestseller lists the day my book came out. Since then, I’ve learned a LOT more, and now I help authors to achieve even better results than I did.

As far as saving up your money, yes, it is very important to decide just how much money you are willing to invest in the production AND promotion of your book over the coming year. But most importantly, you need to decide where that money is going to be spent, and what would make the  biggest impact– not only on your sales but also on your overall happiness.

To hire me (or someone else) as a 1-to-1 coach and project manager to help you build your platform and design your book campaign is certainly an alternative (and I work VERY hard for my clients), but hiring a private coach might not be financially possible for some, especially brand new authors.

And from my end, working with one author at a time is great, but simply does not allow me to reach the sheer quantity of people who ask me for help on a weekly basis.

Finding a publisher or hiring someone, whether an agent, a coach or a PR and imagining they will magically take all the “burden” of marketing your book away from you is not only a delusion, but it will also disempower you and disconnect you from your project in the long term. Understanding, reaching and connecting regularly and authentically with your audience is THE key to your long term satisfaction in your career as a mind-body-spirit author.

And for all those reasons, and many more,  I started Spirit Authors at www.spiritauthors.com.

I call Spirit Authors a “Virtual Coaching and Learning Experience” for mind-body-spirit authors.

I am utilising my combined skills and professional experience as a teacher, trainer, coach and online promotional expert to design 5 modular courses intended to train both new authors, as well as those who might have published before but may not have gotten the results they wanted.

Module 1 is all about starting and writing your book, and developing your personal style, and understanding what “blocks” you. Of course, if you have already written your book, you don’t have to start here. You can start right in at Module 2.

Module 2 is all about building your online promotional platform. This is something you really should initiate many months before your book is ready to go to print, as it involves establishing a following long before your book is released, using social networking and other means. I really believe this Module is going to be the big cornerstone “eye opener” for many authors.

Module 3 is about getting ready to publish, including understanding about royalties, getting endorsements, finding and working with a copy editor, etc.

Module 4 is about creating a book launch campaign, which is a complex art in itself, and it can be executed properly only when the things I teach in Modules 2 and 3 are in place.

Module 5 is on how to take your book further, after a (hopefully) successful self-publishing launch, so you can expand your visibility and build a business around your profile as an author.

The Spirit Authors site will also include an online professional environment via a Forum, so people can establish connections for joint venture partnering, which is really the foundation of self-publishing success (or any internet-based businesses today).

In addition, I am currently compiling a list of very valuable resources for authors, which I am making available only to members.

We will also have monthly “Master Mind” calls. I have a HUGE list of people who want to come and share their wisdom with my Spirit Authors. On these calls, you will highly specialised experts in the field, and be able to ask them your questions, and discover their secrets.

And remember: all of these elements are custom designed specifically with the mind-body-spirit author in mind. I am a lifelong artist and spiritual questor (if that’s a word?). I speak YOUR language, and not the language of other cookie-cutter book marketing programmes.

To sum up, the hope and dream I have in creating Spirit Authors is to provide mind-body-spirit authors with all the answers they need to be successful in their writing projects.

The site will be a membership site, and is opening the week of 22-26 February 2010. I have a “Grand Opening Webinar Week” (free of course) with 18 successful authors, publishers, editors, book marketers and others, all with a mind-body-spirit focus, who will be talking on various topics. I am sure you would enjoy it and find the information useful.

I hope that helps, and I look forward to getting to know more about your work.

Lets' Go!If you want to write a book but just can’t seem to get going, maybe you still need the most important ingredient. Author, coach Lynn Serafinn of Spirit Authors explains.

Perhaps you’ve dreamt of writing a book, but just didn’t know where to start.

You might have told yourself you needed something “more” before you could even think of beginning such a project. You might have told yourself you needed more training or technical understanding. You might have told yourself you needed more time or self discipline. You might have told yourself you needed more connections, more talent, more ideas, more originality, more confidence, more language skills, more… well, you fill in the blanks.

After years of professional experience as a musician, writer, teacher and a coach who works with creative people, there is one thing I have learned: as soon as we humans start to impose such “I-can’t-do-this-until-I-have-more-of-something-or-other” conditions upon our dreams, we completely shut down our natural, creative process. While this is true for all people, it is especially true for the soft, sensitive and highly reflective types of people who write in the mind-body-spirit genre.

I’d like to invite you to forget for a minute about all the things you might have told yourself in the past. There is really only ONE thing you need in order to write a book, especially a mind-body-spirit book: You need to be able to identify why your book must be written. Only when you have truly identified the greater purpose for your book will you be able to get behind it 100%. A clear purpose will serve you far greater than any other “practical” element you have might imagined you needed. During the publication process of my first book, I myself encountered several roadblocks where I worried I might lose hope, but, time after time, the greater purpose of my book brought me back into balance, got me reconnected, and kept me going to bring it to the level of success I wanted.

This is why the very first lesson of Module 1 in the Spirit Authors course is entitled “Identifying Why Your Book Must Be Written”. Notice I use the word “must”. I believe, in the greater scheme of the Universe, your book “must” be written. It’s essential you also believe this, and that you know the reason why this is so. I don’t take an intellectual approach to guide you through this discovery, but a true coaching process to help you uncover all the hidden layers of resistance that may be blocking you from fully connecting to the heart and soul of your book project. Even if you are already writing a book, or have written books in the past, this lesson gives you practical tools to explore and discover the essence of the “life purpose” of your book, so you can not only get started, but stick with it even when the going gets rough.

To find out more about how Spirit Authors can help you make your mind-body-spirit book a success, visit the Spirit Authors Virtual Coaching and Learning Experience at http://spiritauthors.com. Lynn Serafinn

Question: What DOES a spiritually-minded person who is a social networking mentor, techno-geek, coach, radio host, teacher, distance learning course designer, bestselling mind-body-spirit author with a background in audio and a passion for writing and talking (a lot) do to combine all of her skills, talents and interests in one place?

Hi everyone. Lynn Serafinn here. If you’re reading this Spirit Authors blog (which has not yet officially launched as it’s still in its developmental phase) you probably know me from one of my other “hats”: a transformation coach, radio host or author of the book The Garden of the Soul: lessons from four flowers that unearth the Self. Others of you might know me via social networks like Twitter, Facebook, Ning or LinkedIn. Regardless of from where you might know me, today I’d like to share some other sides to me you may or may not know.

I have spent virtually my whole life engaged in a spiritual journey. I write a good deal about that journey in my book The Garden of the Soul. Now in my mid-50s, I have found a truly peaceful place within myself, and I feel I truly know what Spirit is, and have a deep and meaningful relationship with it.

Since my book came out in April 2009 and became an Amazon mind-body-spirit best-seller (after spending countless hours of my time—but virtually no money—on marketing), I have gained a reputation for my creative online promotional skills. These days I coach/mentor many people on how to use social networking and blogging to develop their writing, and to promote and launch their book.

I had always thought of myself as a “transformation coach”, not a “marketing coach”, so I thought this was a bit unusual at first. But very soon I realised it made perfect sense for me to be moving in this direction. You see, my marketing skills are really the end result of having been an electronic dance artist, small record label owner and freelance musician for many years in the past. In fact, I spent the major part of the last 30 years inventing new ways to promote my work and make a living as an indie artist.

All that professional experience helped me develop a creative and natural approach to self-promotion, and nowadays I help my clients do the same, even those who might have had a “fear” of self-promotion in the past. In short, while many artists (especially those who are spiritually focussed) cringe at the very thought of marketing themselves, I view self-promotion as FUN and ultimately a creative enterprise. It’s all in how authentically you present yourself. It took me a while to “get it”, but once I did, it really worked. Now I help others do the same.

Here’s something else most of you probably DON’T know about me: I also have a Masters degree in a really unusual subject: Adult Education and Distance Learning. That means that I have a bunch of experience designing and delivering online courses. I taught music technology for many years, used to be the head of a large college performing arts department and I even won the Microsoft UK Innovative teacher of the year award for my use of technology in education in 2005. Keeping up with modern technology, I am currently taking a certification course in developing membership sites, like Spirit Authors (see my video in previous post where I show what I am using to make this site).

My interests have always been so varied, it has frequently been difficult to connect all the dots and find a way to express all of my passions in one place. So, what DOES a spiritually-minded person who is a social networking mentor, techno-geek, coach, radio host, teacher, distance learning course designer, bestselling mind-body-spirit author with a background in audio and a passion for writing and talking (a lot) do to combine all of her skills, talents and interests in one place?

Well, she creates Spirit Authors  of course! She invents a place where other spiritually-minded authors and related professionals can come together, connect, find support, and learn about writing, online promotion and other things, all through the magic of modern Web 2.0 technology.

For me, creating Spirit Authors means I get to write a lot, talk a lot, teach a lot, coach a lot, meet new people, and get to play with lots of new technological toys. But best of all, all the people who will come to Spirit Authors will be BOTH spiritually-focussed and artistically inclined. It’s just about the most personally fulfilling scenario I could ever imagine. It’s like heaven to me. That’s why I’m using the little fluffy clouds in the banner at the top of the page.

I have never been as motivated and as excited about a new project as I am about Spirit Authors, and I cannot wait to share it with you. Over the coming weeks, I’ll be writing micro-blogs about the Spirit Authors courses, features and, of course, about the exciting Grand Opening that’s coming the week of 22-26 February 2010. I hope you’ll subscribe to the Spirit Authors News Feed by entering your email at the box at the right. That way, you’ll know everything there is to know about Spirit Authors, and get a special VIP invitation to our Grand Opening.

Yours in spirit,
